A flat or failed battery is the single most common reason drivers find themselves stranded. Modern cars draw a small but constant current when parked — alarms, immobilisers, keyless entry systems and infotainment modules all keep draining the battery, and over a few days of short trips or idle standing the charge can drop below the point needed to crank the engine. Other causes are just as frequent: a light left on in the boot, a door not fully shut, an ageing battery that no longer holds charge, or a failing alternator that isn't topping it up while you drive. Cold weather accelerates all of this, which is why flat batteries spike over the winter months.
A jump start gets a vehicle running again in minutes by feeding current from a healthy power source into the flat battery, enough to turn the engine over. It's a genuine fix when the battery has simply run down — but it is not a cure for a battery that can no longer hold a charge, or for an underlying charging-system fault. That's why our mobile call-out always includes a free battery test: once the engine is running we measure the battery's standing voltage and its behaviour under load, so we can tell you honestly whether a jump start has solved the problem or whether the battery needs replacing before it leaves you stranded again tomorrow.
If the battery tests fine but the car still won't start reliably, the fault usually lies elsewhere — and that's where our mobile diagnostics come in. A starter motor drawing too much current, a parasitic drain from a module that won't sleep, a corroded earth strap, or a failing alternator can all mimic a flat battery. Rather than guess and throw parts at it, we read the live data and fault codes from the vehicle to pinpoint the actual cause, explain it in plain English, and only recommend work that's genuinely needed. Across Coalville and the surrounding towns we carry out jump starts, battery tests and diagnostics at the roadside, at home and at work — so you don't need a recovery truck or a garage booking just to find out why the car won't start.
Repeatedly jump-starting a battery that won't hold charge can damage the alternator and sensitive electronics. Get the battery tested — it only takes a minute and tells you whether a replacement is needed.
